Nvidia is now freesync-able (or is it?)

Today, Nvidia released their new driver 417.71. Its announcement was quite astonishing, since most of the time new drivers only matter to you if you recently bought a new game that still has some issues nVidia adresses in their Drivers.

This driver however, adds full support for VESA adaptive sync, an industry standard that AMD implemented long ago as "AMD freesync".

So after downloading the latest driver i rebooted my PC, then opened it up to find the new options.

As you may notice, my drivers are set to german, however the posiiton of the G-Sync-settings is likely the same for any localization. What also may strike you is that nvidia didnt bother translating the settings in depth, while they did at least translate the headline ("G-Sync einrichten").

Nvidia released a list of compatible Displays, however they are so few, its a joke really. Whats cool is that, they are not locking you into just using these, but under "Display Specific Settings", you can enable G-Sync for your "non validated" Display as well.

Myself, i use a Samsung U28e590d, a lower end 4k display. It supports up to 60hz, which makes it rather unattrative for adaptive sync since you dont really want your display to have to go down in hz when you reach 61 (those would likely need to be cut in half to match 30,5 which then in turn would feel and look worse than 60hz V-Sync would). Still, i felt like testing, and the results were devastating.

In Forza Horizon 4, the whole game is ruined by this combination. I cant even describe the effect. Flickering? No, its worse, basically you feel like your graphics are skipping back and forth. Like the monitor notices it forgot to play back a frame that got rendered 10 frames ago and it just wants to show it to you, even though this will make you feel like your car is driving backwards.
I made this horrible recording with my phone, but the skipping your seeing is not compression, its the actual gameplay.

So what is a great idea, just wont work with my setup at all. However im not blaming nVidia. I think its smart of them to start with a few compatible monitors, so they can guarantee function. This would just not be a viable option for all monitors out there that, by one way or another, got an AMD freesync sticker up on their box. Still allowing people to try and make it work on their monitor is a good compromise, and for me, it at least gave me something to dabble with on a sick day (i caught a cold :( ).
However, unless there is an update that greatly improves overall performance, i cant be bothered to try Nvidias new G-Sync on my monitor again.
