Inno3D GTX 1070 Ti - Small form factor graphics cards for 4k gaming?

I recently decided it was time to upgrade my PC. I wanted more Power, especially playing Forza Horizon 4 was a pain with my old GTX 960 by KFA2. My PC has a relatively short case, making it impossible to fit blower style or even triple fan graphics cards. However i kinda like my case for its simplicity and balanced form factor, so my next graphics card had to be another small form factor one.

Inno3D GTX 1070 Ti X2 V2

This card kinda seemed like a ghost to me. Without any reviews online, it was hard figuring out if this was a decent card or just too cheap of a build to be good.

I went for the gamble and bought this card for ~425€ on ebay. it comes with a super small form factor, even though it isnt even marketed as "mini". However it still retains a dual fan setup, possibly allowing for less noise than with a single fan having to spin way up to keep things properly cooled.

 Looks and connectivity

Opening, the Box, youll notice one thing: This really is a tiny card, suited for small form factor ITX or even mini STX computer builds!

Just look at it compared to the Zotac, which actually is marketed as a mini-card. The X2 V2 however is just a successor to the X2 V1 which had a larger cooling solution. Its seems inno3D wanted to save on their cooling rather than aggressively marketing their card as a particularily small form factor one.

Talking about looks, this card really does have a "low-end" vibe to it. With the fans having plain stickers on them, no backplate and highly visible screws, it does not really look like your regular high-end GPU. It has an "industrial" type of look. However, except for the missing backplate, the metal casing around the fans really gives the card a sturdy feel to it.

What does contribute to a overall "cheap" verdict is the connectors - it has 2 DVI ports, 1 HDMI and 1 DisplayPort. I cant think of any reason to give a card this selection of interfaces, other than DVI being the cheapest to implement. Keep in mind that DVI cant 4k! Personally, i use a single 4k monitor. But for someone with 2 monitors and a VR Headset, this may become troublesome! Monitors with DVI are becoming less common already. And "converting" DVI to HDMI/DP is not possible with an adapter - you will need an actual converter for that, which is something nobody really wants!

Regarding power connectivity, the card draws from just a single 8-Pin connector and the PCI-express slot. I actually ran this on a 350w PSU without any issues (not recommending this though!). However, having switched to a corsair cx 550, i think this is where you should aim with this card just to be safe.

Noise and performance

The card actually runs pretty quiet. It doesnt zero-fan, but with a closed case its still very quiet and i couldnt tell a difference to my old GTX 960 which has zero-fan.

It delivers good performance without ever running into thermal throttling (in my case, at least) - I could play Forza Horizon 4 at 4k with high settings without the card dropping far below 60fps. Ultra was not an option though.

However, any overclocking with MSI Afterburner caused games to stutter. this might be due to the card having a highly customized PCB to get it this small - Afterburner is possibly just not the right choice for tampering with this card. However, i wouldnt advise overclocking this card anyway. It runs decently fast just as it is, but the cooling solution doesnt seem like it had overclocking in mind. Also, the fans do get pretty loud when they have to spin 90-100% - without OC this will never happen.

Other stuff and comprehension

The Inno3D includes a free mousepad, which i find to be a really decent gimmick! its sturdy and looks nice. It does the job without wasting your money on cool looks, connectors that most people wont ever use or fancy looking cooling solutions that arent needed for the cool, energy efficient chips that Nvidia is known to produce in the pascal generation.

Pros/Cons

+ good price
+ low noise for a "mini" card
+ delivers full 1070 ti performance

o decent, but not at all fancy build quality

- only 2 modern display connectors (1xHDMI, 1xDP)
- no backplate
- no OC headroom at all

Overall i think this card is an option that you might want to consider. If you need just 1 or 2 high definition displays, this card will not have any downsides for you, but a price point that really makes it enjoyable. And being considerably smaller than Zotac Mini cards, this may be your chance to get high end graphics in a really small system without having to sacrifice Dual Fan technology for some single fan gigabyte card.
